Stand Still- Cory Jones Q and A

It is not very often that I get to play a round with a person that I am interviewing or writing about. Actually, I had never done that until I met Cory Jones. Cory is a local player/professional and I got the chance to meet up with him on our local course and play a round. Needless to say he shot better than me but it was still fun. He was a down to earth, stand still throwing, insightful guy to play with and if you get the chance you should throw a round with him as well! So, as always, enjoy!

1) How did you get into Disc Golf?

I first got into Disc Golf after learning about it from my brother and one of his work friends. We found out there was a course a few minutes from our houses (White River DGC, Auburn WA) and I got started there.

2) Who inspires you to continue to play?

I am inspired to play by a lot of people! I am lucky to have good friends that are a large part of our sport and community both local and worldwide. My friends, family, and fans insure that I keep on this journey!

3) What is it like to be sponsored?

Being sponsored at ANY level is a great feeling and something that drives us as athletes. Getting the opportunity to be sponsored by an international manufacturer and a leading company in the New Age of disc golf is an ABSOLUTE honor. I could not be more grateful for the opportunities that I have been given by Prodigy Disc!

4) What is it like to be on Team prodigy?

Being a part of Team Prodigy means the world to me! In 2013 I had realized that this sport is what I want to dedicate my life to, and I had a desire to find a company that fit my goals and style. Prodigy Disc was the answer!! I have been lucky enough to be a part of the Prodigy family since 2016 as a part of the Street Team.

5) Favorite Disc?

I get asked this question a LOT, and I can honestly say my FAVORITE disc is the 350g Pa3! Putting is the most CRUCIAL part of the game, and I would be lost without my Pa3!

6) Favorite Course?

Favorite local course: SeaTac

Favorite Travel Course: Milo McIver (particularly the Beaver State Fling layouts)

7) What advice can you give to players who want to step up their game?

The biggest improvements ON the course come from your work ethic OFF the course. For every shot I take on the course, I've practiced it 1,000 times in the field. For every putt I make, I've made 1,000 in the back yard.

8) What can we expect from you going into the 2018 season?

The 2018 season is going to be my biggest yet! I will be hitting the road a good portion of the year to tour as much as possible! With some exciting news on the horizon for me, I'm ready to see what the road has to offer and see all my touring family.

9) Do you have any pre-tournament rituals? If so, What are they?

I spend the morning watching one of two movies: Happy Gilmore, or Caddy shack.

I drink my Kombucha.

I stretch/do yoga for about an hour.

I get to the course as early as possible so I can begin to get my mental focus for the day ahead, start my putting ritual, and find the sweet spot!

10) What do you do to help grow the sport?

My biggest accomplishment in growing the sport this year was running my first PDGA tournament, "We Are The Future" - an all Juniors tournament sponsored by Prodigy Disc. Seeing the kids enjoy the custom layout I designed, and getting the sweet players packs we put together from Prodigy (with the help of Tina Stanaitis and Eric Oakley of #WhaleSacs) was the BEST feeling all year.

Alongside that I have been giving lessons to newer players as well as players looking to transition into the competitive realm of Disc Golf. All in all I am always looking to give back to the community that has been so open to me!!

11) Is there anything else you would like people to know about you that they may not?

Im an avid gamer, a Vegan, I LOVE hip-hop, beatboxing, and skateboarding. I also record commentary for NWDGTV, check us out!

I would like to thank Cory for letting be throw a round with him and also answering these questions! If you would like to know more about him you can find him on social media and be on the lookout for him in the 2018 season! Look out for more coming soon!
