Fossa- Parker Asay Q and A
When it comes to companies across all sports, having something that is memorable is key. So, when I found out about Fossa, I just had to talk to the man behind the operation. I got the chance to Parker Asay and it was a great interview and a great learning experience as well. He was fun to talk to and learning about an up and coming company in the world of Disc Golf is always exciting. Enjoy!
1) How did you get into Disc golf?
I was in KC and I had a choice between going to the Nordstrom’s shoe sale with my mom and aunts or going with my favorite cousin (Neil P!) to throw frisbees…easy choice.
2) Who inspires you to continue to play?
I always strive to get better, just for myself. For every putt I miss, I want to put down 100 good ones in my backyard to make up for it. I play alone mostly, so it’s always about improvement. Personal goals keep me hooked.
3) How did Fossa get its start?
I’ve been involved in manufacturing, factory work & product design for quite some time before I knew anything about disc golf. When It was time to bag-up from my Innova starter bag, there wasn’t much to choose from. I immediately started designing bags & crunching numbers. One thing led to another, and my entrepreneurial spirit got the best of me. Next time I blinked I was sitting in a bank taking out a loan.
4) Why "Fossa"?
I wanted something people would remember. I wanted an animal logo for sure… I literally googled “cool animal” and the Fossa – top predator of Madagascar was an image result….I thought to myself, “this is it” and I started sketching out logo designs.
5) favorite Disc?
Hands down…my lucid Emac truth that was given to me by Kyle Webster… I’d be absolutely heartbroken if I lost it.
6) Favorite course?
This one is hard. Rosedale down under (KC) is the first course I ever played, so I love going back. Oak Grove in Springfield, MO is where I really learned to play, so its in my heart. Bad Rock in Liberty, MO is probably the one I want to most play again….I’d say though… the winner for my favorite course is Thornfield in Stillwell, KS. Privately owned and only open to charity events. Super fun and technical course. Every kind of shot imaginable…I’ve only ever played it with family, and I’ve only ever made great memories there. #1 in my books.
7) What can we expect from Fossa in 2018?
No Idea. Always looking to expand the brand and have a good time. I’ll take whatever comes at me.
8) What does it take to get onto Fossas team?
Great character. Phenomenal attitude. It doesn’t matter if you’re a 750 player or 1030 player… if people don’t like you, I’m not interested in the slightest bit. I like to sponsor good people who also play disc golf.
9) What makes Fossa different than other companies?
FOSSA is still at the level where we can still help out and be personable without being a “big box” company. From day one, we’ve always been about giving back and helping friends and family. There’s never been any money taken out of the company to pay for personal benefits or salaries, so all the money made with what we do is recycled back into products and our players. I plan on keeping it that way.
10) Is there anything else you would like people to know about you or Fossa that they may not?
