Dreams of Plastic- Terry Sycamore Q and A
There are so many companies out there who are trying to make a difference within the Disc Golf community. One of the newer companies who are trying to make a move and grow the sport is "Dreams of Plastic" led by Terry Sycamore. He was a pleasure to talk to and has some insights on what you can expect form them coming very soon! Enjoy!
1) How did you get into Disc Golf?
My friend Porter Elliot took me out to Diamond X in Billings Montana one day and handed me a disc. It was love at first flight.
2) Who inspires you to continue to play?
I play a underground glow weekly and the guys who play there are really good, they inspire me and push me to play better, I also love watching Micheal Johansen's fluid style, I have some neck problems so my playing style has to be smooth and low powered, but watching that dude effortlessly get distance with accuracy is really inspiring me and has made me realize that wrenching on my body actually hurt my distance as well.
3) What made you want to review discs?
I've always loved sharing, when I have something I love I want to share it with the world. That's what makes me want to share and learn.
4) Favorite Disc? Favorite plastic with that disc?
My favorite disc right now is the discraft comet in z plastic. It will show you any flaws in your form, and when you throw it right, it rewards you greatly. I also like it because it goes straight, I love tight gaps and low ceiling shots, I love shaping lines and watching it work out, when it does ;)
5) Favorite Course?
My favorite course is La Mirada
6) How do you continue to grow the sport?
We continue to grow the sport by trying to share our love and passion, but also, if you want to grow the sport we have a responsibility to keep our image compatible with the current marketplace. We love disc golf because its not those other sports, but if we want big sponsors and money and development, we have to conform a little. I love going out and having a few beers on the course and maybe lighting up now and then, but I keep it on the down low, its so easy to keep the beer in a coozy, or sneek a puff. Golfers do the same things we do, they just dont make it part of their image.
7) What can we expect from you in 2018?
We are refining the logo and branding now and early 2018 we will start launching our clothing line. Custom Stamped discs, and more.
8) What advice can you give to someone who wants to start doing what you do?
You can do anything. Dont listen to anyone else but yourself, people will stand in your way and tell you how you cant, just do your thing, if your passionate about it, people will follow.
9) What advice can you give someone to step up their game?
If you want to step up your game, in anything at life, you have to let go of your pride, and try new techniques, when you try something new or change the way you have done something in the past. You are gonna suck for awhile, meaning, you are going to get worse before you get better. That's why people don't advance, 2 steps back, 3 steps forward, repeat.
10) Is there anything else you’d like the people to know about you that they may not? I want everyone to know that we set out to build a community, and you are all part of it, if you love plastic and discs, and you're not a complete asshole, you're part of the fam, hit us up! Send us reviews, comments, share your ideas with us. Reach out, be a part of the movement! "We All Dream of Plastic"
