Motivated- Kristy Lee Q and A
On my journey to interview and talk to as many people as I can. I have recently started talking to many Kastaplast team members as my journey goes. Another name to add to this list is the amazing Kristy Lee. She was an amazing individual to talk to and has a great story to tell of her career so far! Enjoy!
1) How did you get into Disc Golf?
My friend asked me to play. After the round was done I bought myself a disc, I was hooked.
2) Who inspires you to continue to play?
It is the game that inspires me to play. I motivate myself to practice and become the best I can be. I don't watch disc golf online.
3) What made you want to start accepting money?
When I started playing this game I don't think I had the choice, it was usually cash payouts non PDGA. I do prefer cash to help with travel costs and tourney fees.
4) What is it like to be sponsored?
I feel that getting sponsored by Kastaplast is my greatest accomplishment in disc golf. I am happy to be throwing their discs, they are the best quality discs made with the best feeling plastic. Yeah, I'm pretty stoked.
5) What is it like to be on Team Kastaplast?
I have played team sports all of my life until I found disc golf. Disc golf is an individual game and I have had to learn this. To be on Team Kastaplast gives me much pride. I appreciate everything they do as a company and as individuals to continue to grow our sport.
6) Favorite Disc?
My Kaze Z is my favorite disc. This disc is just between a mid and a fairway driver and always files true even in head winds for me.
7) Favorite Course?
Bowen Park ~Nanaimo, Vancouver Island
Golf Island Disc Park~ Pender Island
I must admit, I don't get out to enough disc golf courses.
8) Where do you do your normal tour?
I play on Vancouver Island and surrounding Islands, I will also play Vancouver courses where most of our provincial tournaments are held.
9) What advice can you give to players who want to step up their game?
Field work is an asset to becoming better. Putting makes perfect. Playing with people who are better than you will help to step up your game.
10) What can we expect from you going into the 2018 season?
Well... 2017 was a pretty sweet year for me. I hooked up with Team Kastaplast. I went to England with Team Canada and won the Gold Medal in the World Team Disc Golf Championships. In 2018, I hope to travel down to the USA for some tournaments. I plan to carry on from last years successes and have another fun year.
11) What’s a normal day look like for you?
The closest disc golf course to me is two hours away. During the week I will throw putts for 20 mins a day at my house, on nice days I go to the field and practice drives for half an hour. On weekends I will play two rounds a day or more.
12) Do you find it hard to play Disc golf in Canada? professionally at least
I wish there were more tournaments in Canada with more competition.
13) What do you do to help grow the sport?
I live and breath disc golf so anyone who knows me knows about this sport. Coming from a city that has no course it is hard work to keep a club going. I try my best to gather a group together and demonstrate disc golf at different parks.
14) Is there anything else you would like people to know about you that they may not?
I spent years playing disc golf in parking lots because there is no course where I live. I must travel 4 hours plus to play a round of disc golf. There are not many people who have that drive and passion for this game. Through the friends I have made and the experiences I will remember it is so worth it.
I would like to thank Kristy for taking the time out of her day to answer these questions and get back to me quickly! If you would like to keep up with Kristy or know more about her, follow her on all forms of social media! Look out for more on the way!
